Slower economic growth affect mid-range handset segment the most, says Nokia Taiwan

The impact of a slowing global economy has been stronger on the mid-range handset segments, as compared with the high- and low-end segments, indicated Tsung-kai Cheng, manager of Nokia Taiwan’s clients and market operations.

Low-end handsets are daily necessities and high-end handsets target consumers who are not buying handsets for necessity, and these two types of purchases are not as affected by the economy as much as the mid-range segments, Cheng noted.

With distributors not confident about sales of mid-range handsets, Cheng pointed out that Nokia is planning to adjust related prices in coordination with more market promotions to stimulate consumer demand.

According to market watchers, handset vendors are introducing a number of high-end handsets with various promotions to stimulate demand. High-end handset shipments are expected to remain at current levels or perhaps even increase.

Nokia’s CTO steps down for “personal reasons”

We thought he probably would’ve at least stuck around long enough to see the Tube get announced later this week, but Nokia CTO Bob Iannucci has announced that he’s stepping down from the world’s number one cellphone maker effective immediately for undisclosed “personal reasons.” Though it might seem that the move leaves a gaping hole in Espoo’s senior leadership, the company actually says that Bob will continue on in an advisory role while it decides whether it even needs a CTO going forward. Bob also served as head of the Nokia Research Centre — also known as the place where you get to play with Haptikos — where Henry Tirri, current head of the center’s Systems Research group, will be taking over.

Motorola Hiring 350 for Android Team. Nokia, Verizon Looking to Join Party

Just how serious are phone manufacturers about Android, Google’s new, open OS? According to TechCrunch, several phone manufacturers are following HTC and T-Mobile’s example–in a big way.

Motorola currently has 50 people on its Android squad, a number expected to increase to 350 soon, according to a job recruiter tasked with getting programmers to join the cause.

Nokia and Verizon have also apparently been looking to join up, despite the fact that neither phone heavyweight is currently an official member of Google’s Android alliance.

My guess is that pretty much everyone but Apple and AT&T is tired of being left out of all of that iPhone buzz from the past few years. T-Mobile’s G1 launch got plenty of notice, but rest assured that this is only the beginning of the big time Android hype.
