Yahoo App For Apple iPhone

Yahoo App For Apple iPhone

Yahoo! has released its namesake app, Yahoo!, for iPhone users. The app, which was released yesterday, allows iPhone users to customize the app, choosing the content and services that are relevant to their needs. With the seemingly unlimited number of iPhone apps, it’s hard to imagine what cool app will be coming to the iPhone next.

China Unicom Still Cannot Confirm iPhone

China Unicom Still Cannot Confirm iPhone

Recent reports indicated that China Unicom would be getting Apple’s iPhone, and who wouldn’t think so, especially since they boldly put up images of the iPhone. Now it seems that the company’s chairman, Chang Xiaobing, states that negotiations are still ongoing, and they still have a couple of issues left to sort out. 2 of the main problems that they face are the Chinese law banning Wi-Fi use in mobile phones, and Unicom’s stubborn insistence of installing its own software for the iPhone, which supposedly has some non-iTunes media player. There’s no telling how long this debate will go on for. Speculation hints that it may not be until the end of the year till all the nitty gritty details are thrashed out.

iPhone 3G Update Coming Soon?

iPhone 3G Update Coming Soon?

RBC analyst Mike Abramsky speculates that Apple will be announcing an update iPhone 3G during its annual developers conference on June 8-12th, and also that the device will be released in July. Possible new features for an updated iPhone would include faster 3G connections, meaning a transition from HSDPA to HSUPA, video recording, 16GB/32GB memory space, and a tad thinner than the current iPhone 3G. The bad news is that he speculates that the pricing will remain the same, whilst most consumers are hoping that Apple will lower the prices during the current global recession.

No Skype For iPhone In Canada

No Skype For iPhone In Canada

Most iPhone users will certainly have been rejoicing at the news that Skype will be coming to your iPhone. While that’s all fine and dandy, it looks like there is also some bad news associated with this. It seems that folks who are living in Canada will be left out from all this Skype goodness. A public relations representative for Skype has stated that Skype for the iPhone will be available in every country that the iPhone is on sale and Apple has an iTunes store, aside from Canada, bummer. Apparently this is because of a patent issue relating to Skype, and it’s not an issue with Apple. To be honest, we’re fairly sure that Canadians don’t really care whether Skype or Apple is to blame, as long as the Skype client for the iPhone is released over there.

Huawei iPhone Coming?

Huawei iPhone Coming?

Rumors of an Android-powered Huawei phone coming to T-Mobile in Q3 this year have been around for a while. Now word is out the said phone is on track for a 3rd quarter release and is currently going through the testing phase. There aren’t a great many details on it just yet, but as the rumor goes, the phone will have a 5-megapixel camera, 3.5mm headphone jack, the Cupcake update, Wi-Fi, though unfortunately there isn’t any mention of UMA. Hopefully we’ll be able to pick up more pictures of this device in the near future, so stay tuned!

Skype Officially Comes to iPhone, iPod touch

Skype will allow users to place calls to landlines for free or cheaply — sadly there’s no calling to wireless sets for iPhone users

The iPhone’s service plans aren’t the most expensive smart phone plans in the industry, but they’re far from the cheapest.  But imagine if you could get one of America’s hottest smart phones and get phone calls and ultra-low rates or even for free.  That’s exactly what Skype for iPhone, recently announced is promising.

The new application allows Wi-Fi connected users to place free calls to fellow Skype users and call at reduced rates to traditional landlines.  The only downside is that cellular carriers have nixed mobile to mobile calling.

People that stand to save a lot with Skype are business travelers.  Typically when travelling overseas, many people run into compatibility problems with the local networks.  Even for providers with relatively good overseas coverage, like AT&T, the service providers typically hit customers with big fees.  With Skype, though, calls back home will remain the same — either free, or really cheap.

As far as the interface goes, the new Skype iPhone app will strike PC Skype users as very different.  It’s much richer graphically and looks somewhat like Facebook in layout.  Users can put status messages, update a profile picture or even chat via different options in the Apps menus.  Chat is the only feature that you can use over cellular networks.

Skype has 400 million users and already has been released for Nokia, Windows Mobile, and Google Android smart phones, as well as Sony’s PSP mobile gaming device.  A Blackberry version is coming in May.  It’s worth noting that the Android version allows 3G wireless-to-wireless Skype calls, unlike the new iPhone app version.  Also, all of the mobile versions still lack many of the features of their desktop brethren — SMS, video and proper conference calling, file transfer, and voicemail.

The iPhone app is available today for free to download on Apple’s App Store.  It is also available for use with the iPod Touch, essentially making the Touch a potential phone.  Touch users, though, will have to buy a microphone to use the app.
