What’s missing from your iPhone?
The new survey asks users to rank the top five features they’d like added to their iPhone 3Gs, including picture messaging, cut and paste, Flash support, and turn-by-turn directions. When (and if) we’ll actually get said features is another question.
AppleInsider got its hands on the latest survey, which is apparently a follow-up to a similar e-mail that went out shortly after the iPhone 3G launch in July.
The e-mail asks users to “indicate the FIVE features that would be most important to you to have on the iPhone 3G,” and most of the options are ones we’ve heard beforeâindeed, all the items on the survey are already listed on Pleasefixtheiphone.com, the iPhone “wish list” site that I blogged about last week.
Some examples: the ability to read/compose e-mail in landscape mode, unlocking the iPhone for use with other carriers, a user-replaceable battery, more storage, Flash support for Safari, video recording, contact searching (already implemented in firmware 2.0), document editing, and the one missing feature that everyone’s clamoring for: cut and paste.
As AppleInsider correctly points out, the AT&T survey doesnât necessarily mean that any of the listed features are actually on the way for the iPhone. As we’ve seen many times before, when it comes to deciding what features to add or tweak on the iPhone 3G, Apple tends to go its own way.
Consider the early reports for the just-seeded iPhone firmware 2.2 beta, which apparently enables Google Street View and in-line audio accessories, but (as far as developers can tell, at least) skips such oft-requested features as cut and paste, picture messaging, and background app notifications (a feature promised months ago by Apple but not listed in the AT&T survey).
Personally, I’m glad AT&T is at least asking iPhone users what they want out of their handsets; that said, it’d be nice if Apple listened, too. Guess we’ll find out once iPhone firmware 2.2 hits iTunes.

John McCain Finally Gets His Own iPhone App [Politics]
Sure, Obama may have had his official iPhone app out a while ago, allowing supporters to easily make calls on his behalf and do all sorts of other things, but don’t think there isn’t a John McCain app out there as well. Sure, it might not be official, and it might only work on jailbroken iPhones, but I can honestly say that I’d use the Unofficial John McCain iPhone App way more than the Official Barack Obama iPhone App. [Unofficial John McCain iPhone App via Justin Purnell]

Free WiFi finally comes for iPhone users at Starbucks
|
We’ve reported on this in the past, and it seems that AT&T has flipped the on/off “free Wifi at Starbucks” switch a number of times. Well, today AT&T is sending out text messages to iPhone users telling them that they can now enjoy free WiFi at thousands of hotspots nationwide, including Starbucks. The text message comes with a link to att.com/attwifi which tells you all about the service. When you drill in a bit further you see that all you have to do is connect to the hotspot, enter in your mobile number and then receive a text message with a link that you click. That link says you have “24-hour access” to the hotspot. I’m not sure if that means that you can enjoy WiFi for free for 24 hours or that it’s available 24-hours a day, but either way, there’s some time in there for free surfing. Thanks to jkontherun for the link |

AT&T sending out SMS to confirm free iPhone WiFi at Starbucks
Oh, so you know what’s hot, huh AT&T? Is flipping the on / off lever back and forth a gazillion times on this finicky Starbucks iPhone WiFi plan hot? Because it feels downright cold over here. While we can only hope and pray that this is the signal to finally close the book on this ridiculous saga, AT&T users all over the US are receiving text messages from AT&T confirming that free Starbucks WiFi (for iPhone owners) is on. Reportedly, the message indicates that their iPhone purchase gives them access to two hours of gratis use per day, though we’d go in with the lowest possible expectations in order to not be let down (again). Good luck, mettlesome ones.

iPhone Gets Free AT&T Hotspot Access, Again [At&t]
According to several independent tips we’ve received today, iPhone owners are slowly but surely getting notified that they can receive free Wi-Fi access at all AT&T hotspots (including Starbucks) through a text message. If you’re confused by it all, you aren’t alone. AT&T has had an on-again, off-again relationship with iPhone owners and their Wi-Fi hotspots for quite a while. But now, it looks like AT&T’s Wi-Fi support for iPhones is fully deployed. So grab a pretentious scarf, pour some warm milk in that $4 coffee and celebrate with the rest of us. [Image]

So That’s Why Apple Recalled the iPhone 3G’s USB Power Adapter [IPhone 3G]
Apple’s (truly) massive recall of the iPhone 3G’s compact USB power adapter makes total sense now: It’s a piece of a shit. The “certain conditions” that’ll make its prongs break off are basically breathing too hard, too close, since they only extend about 1/8 of an inch into the adapter and are “held in place with some type of glue and a bit of wishful thinking.” If you haven’t swapped it out yet (like me), step to it (like me tomorrow).
