Apple Rejects Opera Mini For iPhone

Apple Rejects Opera Mini For iPhone

If you’re not satisfied with Safari on your iPhone and want something like Opera Mini to be running on it, then you’ll be sorely disappointed to hear that Apple isn’t going to allow Opera Mini to get anywhere near your iPhone. According to Opera’s CEO, Opera Mini would compete directly with Safari, and that is why Apple is not allowing the app to be made available via the AppStore. Bummer. It looks like love-it-or-hate-it, you’re stuck with Safari on your iPhone.

iPhone T-shirt

iPhone T-shirt

We’ve seen iPhone cupcakes before, so it really shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone to see someone design an iPhone T-shirt. Now if you can’t afford an iPhone, at least you’ll be able to wear a shirt reminding yourself of what you want.

The Week in iPhone Apps: To The Polls! [IPhone Apps]

Wow. Four more days to go. The next time you pop open one of our lovely weekly app roundups, we will have a new man in the White House (knocking on wood hard here). I don’t know about you guys, but I’m a little on edge. This week, let’s have a look at the apps that will make you forget about gerrymandering, vote suppression, and how long you just waited in line and keep your eye on the prize.

VoteReport: This app ties in directly with the Twitter Vote Report project, which is aiming to keep track of the situation at polling locations nation wide on election day via Twitter to make sure all goes smoothly and no nastiness happens (Florida, we’re looking at you). You can send canned updates regarding the status of your polling place, write your own or record an audio message and join the crowdsourced goodness. It’s free.

Classics: After filing your report, you’ll need something to do while you wait in line—Classics is an e-book reader that comes with a limited library of public-domain old timers like Huck Finn, Alice in Wonderland, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, etc, but presents them beautifully—some even with illustrations. If you were planning on reading any of the books on its list soon (more are coming via updates) and are cool with e-readers, this is pretty neat. $3

PanoLab Pro: Now it’s time for a panorama of happy smiling voters filing out of the polls! If you liked the free version of panorama-generator PanoLab, the Pro version for $5 adds more features for making better panos—enhanced export settings at higher resolutsions, auto exposure adjustments for individual photos, etc.

EasyWriter: Useful on election day and beyond, EasyWriter is another free app that lets you write emails in landscape mode which does a few more tricks than the other free one, Firemail, like resizing your composition text with multitouch zoom. Plus, nicer icon. Free.

Fake Calls: Change of heart? “It’s Jobs! Oh, man! I gotta take this! [runs off]” - you get the idea. Free.

Labyrinth: And finally, having nothing to do with election day but adding an interesting twist to the ol’ tilt a marble through the hole game, a recent update to Labyrinth lets anyone create a custom level in a web browser and then download it to the game with a PIN code, a process demonstrated above. Excuse the music here—pretty cool feature though. Free/$7

This Week’s App Coverage on Giz:

•John McCain Finally Gets His Own iPhone App

•Microsoft Office Documents Editing Coming to the iPhone

•Google Earth for iPhone Puts Whole World in the Palm of Your Hand

•Opera for iPhone Ready To Go, If Not For Apple’s App Store Policies

•Apple Really Wants You to Rate Apps in iPhone 2.2

This list is in no way definitive. If you’ve spotted a great app that hit the store this week, give us a heads up or, better yet, your firsthand impressions in the comments. And for even more apps: see our previous weekly roundups here, and check out our original iPhone App Review Marathon. Have a good weekend everybody.

Opera for iPhone Ready To Go, If Not For Apple’s App Store Policies [IPhone Apps]

Not surprising news, this, but sad nonetheless. According to Opera CEO Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner, an iPhone version of its popular mobile browser is developed and ready to go, but will likely never see the light of day due to Apple’s infamous App Store policies, barring apps that compete with the phone’s default features—here, Mobile Safari. Personally I find Safari to be pretty solid, but for those who find it crashy, an alternative would come in handy, and of course, competition is usually a good thing in situations like this. Sigh. Disney Giving Away Free iPhone Game To Promote Movie

from the that’s-how-it’s-done dept

Reader Terry Westley points us to yet another example of how companies are recognizing that content is advertising. Disney has apparently released a free iPhone game that’s fun on its own, but which also serves to help promote an upcoming movie release. While some will dismiss this as just being a cheap way of advertising, you have to wonder what happens when movie makers start making these sorts of games really, really good. Then what happens to game developers who think they can get away with charging for their mobile phone games? Suddenly it becomes a lot harder to support that model if there are other businesses that are using a model where, the more games that are given away for free, the more it helps the rest of their business.

Apple, iPhone Officially Too Gay For Stephen Colbert [Stephen Colbert]

California’s Prop 8, which would strip gay couples of the right to marry in the state, is polling about even right now. Apple has decided to throw their weight behind shooting the measure down, but facetious iPhone enthusiast Stephen Colbert is having none of it. An impassioned speech and patented “Wag of the Finger” wasn’t satisfying enough, so Mr. Colbert dealt with his iPhone in the way that so many copy and pasters, Bluetooth accessorizers and could-be MMSers have come close to: with a hammer. iPhone Gets 1-Seg TV Tuner

iPhone Gets 1-Seg TV Tuner

Makes me wonder how come the Japanese seem to get much better handsets compared to those around the world. Take the Samsung Omnia for instance - they will receive a model with a larger display and much higher resolution with an integrated 1-Seg TV tuner, while the vanilla Omnia everyone outside of Japan has whimpers in a corner. As for the iPhone, Softbank has just released a new external 1-Seg TV tuner with a larger battery that plugs into the iPhone’s port to offer portable TV wherever you go. The only drawback to this peripheral would be the much larger bulk you have to contend with.

SoftBank Boosted By iPhone Sales

SoftBank Boosted By iPhone Sales

Many people were wondering how well Apple’s iPhone would do in Japan, since it’s a totally different market from that in the US, but since SoftBank agreed to be Apple’s iPhone 3G carrier partner, the carrier has seen their bottom line move upwards. Even in the current global economic situation the strong sales of the iPhone 3G helped Softbank increase its net profits to $225 million and saw the biggest net subscriber growth in 17 consecutive months. Whichever way you look at it, the iPhone 3G definitely has been beneficial to SoftBank.

Digital TV Over Wi-Fi For The iPhone

Digital TV Over Wi-Fi For The iPhone

We might not have widespread DVB-T or 1-SEG digital TV like those in Japan, but the Japanese certainly do, and they certainly know how to make use of it. Japanese iPhone 3G owners can opt to have their own wireless 1-Seg TV Tuner that can send video over Wi-Fi. If that wasn’t good enough, to further add salt to the wound is the fact that the 1-Seg tuner can also double up as a battery charger if you want it to. The device can last for about 3 hours of TV viewing, or 2 to 4 hours in charge mode.

Free AT&T Wi-Fi For iPhone Users

AT&T is now offering free AT&T Wi-Fi access to iPhone users at their thousands of hotspots nationwide, including Starbucks. If you want to use the free Wi-Fi service, all you have to do is connect to the “attwifi” network via your iPhone, enter your 10-digit mobile number and check the box to accept the usage policy and you’ll receive a text message with a secure link to the AT&T Wi-Fi hotspot. The free access will be valid for 24 hours, so you’ll have to repeat the process if you come back another day.
