China Mobile could deactivate 3G / WiFi on iPhone 3G launch

Currently, over 400,000 unlocked iPhones are roaming around China. Now that China Mobile is about to officially launch Apple’s latest handset in the world’s most populous country, we can only imagine that figure going up. In a bizarre twist of trying to keep a homegrown 3G standard (TD-SCDMA) alive, the carrier has announced that it is intending to launch the mobile with WiFi and 3G disabled — a move that would make it less appealing to those who may be considering buying one, unlocking it and using it on the expected W-CDMA network from China Telecom. Uncool, China Mobile. Very uncool.

Quickoffice MobileFiles For The iPhone

Quickoffice MobileFiles For The iPhone

Quickoffice has released its new application for the iPhone/iPhone 3G/iPod touch known as MobileFiles. This free (yes, I can see all you coupon savers perking up right about now) application lets one access MobileMe iDisk files directly from an iPhone or iPod touch, something that was previously unavailable to current users. Just like the iPhone’s user interface, MobileFiles is a snap to use and comes with a very low learning curve. It also boasts access to Google Docs accounts and will be available in Q4.

iPhone Clones Run Amok, Right Here on Gearlog

iclone.jpg
Scrolling right down the Gearlog homepage today, I found a large ad for a hideous rabbit hole of iPhone clones. The site www.actfind.com showcases the worst of China’s iPhone ripoffs, including devices which appear to be sold by using pictures of actual Apple iPhones (but are not iPhones), such as the one at left. Amusingly, that seems to be a photo of a jailbroken iPhone. (If you’re looking for the ad, you may have to reload a bunch of times; it’s really all up to the whims of Google’s ad server.)

Here are some winners from the site. The “Shake to Control GSM Quad-band IP001” features “Especial function: Shake to elect song, ditheringge elect motif picture.” Oh does it now?

From a company I’ve actually heard of, the CECT P168S appears to be a more normal touch-screen phone with a cheap imitation of the iPhone interface pasted onto it. It has “flow screen (sometimes called multi-touch),” which I’m sure Apple’s lawyers would just love to know about.

Then there’s the PDA M88+, which has a very, shall we say, iPhoney look. This one is supposedly running Windows Mobile 6, but you’d never know it, because the presumably bogus screen shot they have up has a very iPhone look to it. (Okay, maybe you would know it - zoom the screen shot and you’ll see a little Windows icon in the corner.)

This site makes me sad. It’s not just that their page of iPod Nano ripoffs calls itself a “Wise Scare-Buying Activity,” whatever that means. It’s that sites like these, and manufacturers like these, help spread the image of China’s electronics industry as generating a vast quantity of low quality rip-off crap, as opposed to, say, the innovation and excellence of a Lenovo.

Supposed MacBook Pro redesign, meet Mr. BlurryiPhonecam

Look, there are a hundred reasons to think this might be fake. That janky right corner, the inexplicable “dock in the trackpad” conundrum, the odd lighting and the entirely-too-convenient iSight self portrait. Still, whoever made this has their finger on the pulse of the Apple faithful — or pretty much anyone else that thinks Apple is long overdue for a MacBook Pro refresh. We’ve got Air-inspired curves, a touchscreen trackpad, aluminum and glass in the style of Apple’s latest iMacs, and what appear to be separated keys, which have been slow in coming to the MacBook Pro holdout. Naturally there’s zero info on who the source is, and we’re expecting a “hah, I totally fooled you guys” to spring up at any moment, but there’s clearly some pent up demand for this thing if the rumor mill is any indication.

China iPhone 3G Is Crippled

China iPhone 3G Is Crippled

China Mobile is tipped to roll out the iPhone 3G in China (where else), but without one of its most useful feature - the ability to go online, no thanks to a request for Apple to supply a customized version with Wi-Fi and W-CDMA connectivity disabled. The whole idea behind this bizarre move is to prevent customers from picking up the iPhone 3G and unlocking it for use on more capable networks. I say they might as well just stick to the original iPhone if that’s the case. Would Apple bow down to this demand in the name of a potential customer base that’s the largest in the world, or will they stick to their guns with a “take it or leave it” ultimatum to China Mobile?

Drowned iPhone 3G Reincarnated as Beautiful Fishing Lure [Gadget Reincarnation]

It’s the circle of life, really: man drops iPhone in river while fishing, iPhone dies, iPhone is torn apart, iPhone becomes fishing lure, iPhone catches dinner. Life goes on.

“Seeing it was the river that took it from me, it’s gonna at least catch me some fish,” says Maker Captain Ahab (perfection in a handle). He used the screen polishing cloth for the body, the USB logicboard connector for the legs, touchscreen inreface wires for the head and wings, and various other harvested components to craft this beauty. Now the next step is finding a pond full of fanboy fish. [Fly Addict Forums via MAKE]

iPhone 2.2 Beta 1 Seeded to Developers [Iphone 2.2]

Well, that was speedy. Not too long after iPhone 2.1 arrived to fix most of iPhone 2.0’s most damning problems, Apple has seeded OS 2.2 Beta 1 to developers. No one’s had a chance to dive in yet to see what’s new, but some mo’ bug fixes, push notifications (finally) and added GPS features sound like a good bet, now that most of the bigger bugs are squished. Purchase An iPhone 3G From Your Home

Purchase An iPhone 3G From Your Home

If Apple rolled this program out when the iPhone 3G was launched a little while ago it would have been an instant hit. Now that everybody is busy settling into their iPhone 3G, this new method of buying an iPhone doesn’t seem all that groundbreaking after all. Whether you love it or hate it, Apple has gone live with its new online sales tool that lets you select and pay for a shiny new iPhone, complete with service plan from your home via the internet. After everything is completed, you can just trot over to your local Apple Store to collect and activate your new iPhone. It sure seems handy, though most users probably would be happier if Apple allowed them to activate their iPhones at home instead.

Chinese iPhone 3G Won’t Have 3G or Wi-Fi [IPhone 3G]

According to the South China Morning Post, in China the iPhone 3G won’t have 3G or Wi-Fi. China Mobile wants Apple to disable these two features. The first because they don’t have a 3G network in place. The second nobody knows or can imagine why, but it simply makes the iPhone an almost-useless shiny brick. [Cellular News via Gadget Lab]

Worst. iPhone Costume. Ever. [Iphone Costume]

Seen at the Valley Fair Apple Store here in the Bay Area, some guy’s protesting Apple for something or other while wearing a homemade iPhone costume. Did your mom help you make that costume, sir? Because you should really ask her for help—she’d be able to pick out a nicer typeface and better looking icons. Best of luck to your cause, whatever it is. [Thanks Michael!]
