Orange Admits To Throttling iPhone 3G Speeds

Orange Admits To Throttling iPhone 3G Speeds

Don’t you just hate it when you pay your hard earned cash to a company, expecting that they will render the best level of service possible to you, only to find out that the company has underserved you instead? Orange has recently admitted to artificially throttling the iPhone 3G’s speeds in France for customers, claiming that this decision was made in order for the network to be stable. In that case, can customers “throttle” our payments so that our monthly financial obligations can be stable, too? Just to let you know, iPhone 3G download speeds rarely hit 400Kbps, while those in Germany are touching 1.8Mbps on average. Good thing Orange has owned up to the error of their ways, and will increase 3G data speeds to 1Mbps come this September 15th.

iPhone 3G vs. Sony’s 40-inch ZX1 LCD television… Fight!

We knew Sony’s new 40-inch Bravia Edge LED ZX1 was thin, 9.9-mm thin in fact (at least at the top section). But man, we didn’t expect it to make the iPhone 3G slipping around the insides of our pockets look like such a chubster. Plenty more to see in the gallery below.

Brando unites external iPhone battery with speaker at long last

Nothing says “I’m mad as hell about my iPhone 3G’s battery life and I’m not going to take it anymore” better than blasting it out of a loudspeaker. Bonus points for that loudspeaker being integrated with a battery pack, which in turn connects to your — you guess it — iPhone 3G (or original iPhone, if that’s how you roll). Well, $44 to the folks at Brando will buy you that very opportunity, it turns out. Who knew?

iPhone 3G Antenna Re-Tested With Problem Phone: Still Nothing Wrong With Hardware [IPhone 3G]

In response to claims that their original iPhone 3G test was not valid because the phone used was in good working order, Swedish scientists gathered up 2 iPhones from users that were experiencing reception problems. Once again, testing showed that there was nothing wrong with the antennas. Obviously, you can’t test every phone, but it seems pretty clear that the iPhone antenna is not the problem here. AT&T Reveals Pricey New International iPhone Data Plans

AT&T today announced a number of new iPhone plans aimed at users who travel internationally. They’re not exactly the cheapest plans in the mobile phone industry, but let’s face it: If you’re the frugal type, you’re probably not downloading a ton of data while you globetrot with your iPhone 3G in hand.

The new plans run $120 per month for 100MB and $200 for 200MB of international data (this is in addition to standard domestic data fees). The old plans were $25 and $60 for 20MB and 50MB, respectively.

You think that’s pricey? Check out how much you’d be paying sans-plan. Says The New York Times:

AT&T’s rationale for the fees is that it costs iPhone users traveling abroad an eye-popping $40 to download a three-minute video from YouTube (using two megabytes of data) without one of their plans.

That’s a lot of Washingtons to stream a dog on a skateboard.

iPhone 3G Modded with Macro [Mods]

The iPhone 3G’s camera works alright until you want to grab a shot of something within a foot or so (like a butterfly, or unpopped pimple). And to address this dilemma, one modder softened the glue holding in his iPhone’s camera and rotated the lens to macrofy the fovus. He was able to take several shots within 5 inches, but the most impressive is this picture taken just .25 inches away from its subject. For a phone especially, that’s some impressive macro. If only it didn’t require such delicate surgery to implement—ahem—Apple—ahem. [flickr via TUAW]

iPhone 3G Security Flaw

iPhone 3G Security Flaw

An iPhone security flaw has been found which can allow other people to bypass the built-in passcode protection, which is supposed to lock your iPhone away from prying eyes. The trick to bypass the lock is simple enough, which just involves a couple of taps on the iPhone, which might hint that it was supposed to be a feature, not a bug. Once the security has been bypassed, the intruder will be able to access your contacts list, SMS, mail, and even Safari. Apple has supposedly been notified of this security flaw, and a fix for it should be issued in a future firmware update. Until an official fix is found, user’s can prevent this by setting their “Home Button” double-click preference to “Home” or “iPod”, instead of the default, which is “iPhone Favorites”.

iPhone Security Flaw Exposed

A flaw in the iPhone’s software can allow anyone to bypass the password-locking feature of the phone and get access to the phone’s Favorites menu. Once in the Favorites menu, other parts of the iPhone can be accessed, such as Mail, Safari and SMS. This flaw negates the password-lock feature and exposes user data to anyone with knowledge of the method used to get past the password lock. A temporary solution has been discovered. In the iPhone’s Settings menu, click on “General”, then click on “Home Button”, then click on either “Home” or “iPod”. Choosing one of these two options will prevent anyone from accessing the Favorites menu, and keep most user data safe. [Via This article]
