Factory worker testing iPhone gets online fame

I’m sure a Chinese factory worker who was helping to test an iPhone off the assembly line never imagined the photo a co-worker was taking would catapult her into Internet stardom. Yet, that’s exactly what has happened. It seems a customer from the UK who had recently purchased a new iPhone found a number of photos on his device.

The man, who identifies himself as markm49uk, posted three of the photos on his iPhone to a discussion group on the MacRumors website. According to the Reuters report, the good news is that the factory worker is not suppose to lose her job. Unfortunately, no more information about the female will be released.

If Apple was smart they could use this opportunity to create new commercials staring this factory worker. Then they could purposefully make one out of every five or ten iPhones have photos of other factory workers on them. That way consumers knew they were getting an iPhone that had been quality tested.

iPhone Factory Girl Is Now A Celebrity

iPhone Factory Girl Is Now A Celebrity

Remember the iPhone factory girl? It seems that she’s become quite a celebrity now, though she apparently isn’t enjoying the fame and attention that she’s getting. Her bosses have even assured her that her job is safe, and that the company would not release her name or any details, though users on the Internet will probably find out her name sooner or later. The picture was taken when her co-worker took her picture to test the camera, and forgot to delete it. Of course, it isn’t anything too serious, and users are even having some fun, with some stating that it would be great is every Chinese worker snaps a shot of themselves with the iPhone that they’re assembling, so users will know who assembled their iPhones.

Orange Has Been Throttling iPhone 3G

Orange Has Been Throttling iPhone 3G

If you’re in France and feel that your iPhone 3G is browsing the net rather slowly, you might want to glare in Orange’s direction. While they may not like to admit certain things, they have seen fit to admit that they’ve been throttling the iPhone 3G’s speed in France. While users in Germany can happily hit 1.8Mbps on their iPhone, users in France rarely seem to hit 400Kbps, which sure doesn’t sound too fun. The good news is that Orange has promised that they will increase 3G data speeds to 1Mbps on September 15th. Should they be forgiven for their throttling? Only time (and their subscribers) will tell.

The iPhone 3G’s Problem May Have Been Found and Fixed [Apple]

While Apple and AT&T have both been pretty quiet about what could be going wrong with the iPhone 3G, a new source from inside AT&T has finally broken the silence on the “bug fixes” offered in the latest firmware 2.0.2. So was it fixing the iPhone or the iPhone’s network? Well, sorta both.

Essentially, the 2.0.2 updated the iPhone to ask for less power from AT&T’s towers for UMTS voice and data transmission. Apparently iPhones were simply asking for too much power—more than the handsets actually required—and when many iPhone users were stacked on one base transceiver station tower, the tower simply ran out of power.

No/low tower power equals dropped calls and poor 3G connections.

It’s sort of like splitting a chicken for dinner. If everyone grabs just one piece, it can feed a family. But if Dad goes back for seconds before Mom sits down to the table, someone is going hungry.

The problem will not fix itself until the firmware update is distributed to more handsets. So update your phones and bring me another piece of chicken. [DailyTech via CrunchGear]

If you spend an equal amount of time on your iPhone watching movies as well as talking, it would make perfect sense to consider the iPhone Projector. After all, this device helps project a video image of the movie on a nearby surface, giving your eyes some much needed relief instead of staring at such a small display for hours on end. Orange Denies iPhone 3G Fake Queue

Orange Denies iPhone 3G Fake Queue

While people are still laughing at Orange for hiring people to line up at Polish Orange stores to make it seem like the iPhone 3G was more in demand that in actually was in Poland, Orange has come out and denied reports saying that they did such a thing. A spokesperson for Orange has said that “some of Orange’s team had joined customers outside the shops”, and also mentioned that “sales were strong”. Whether you want to believe what Orange is saying is entirely up to you, though Orange would obviously like you to believe their version of the story.

New iPhone app allows you to find cheap gas

If you’ve just bought a new iPhone 3G you may be looking for a way to get a return on your investment. Well, the Oil Price Information Service (OPIS) has created software which will allow you to track down the cheapest fuel prices in your area. Considering the cost of fuel you may be able to recoup the cost of your iPhone in a short amount of time.

The iGas application uses the iPhone 3G’s GPS information to locate the 10 cheapest fueling stations in a consumer’s area. You can even look up the cheapest prices around a specific zip code. Prices are displayed low to high and are accompanied by the address and brand of the location. Users of the application can have their search criteria include regular unleaded gasoline, premium unleaded or diesel. The iGas application is available via the Apple App store.

Gas is forcing everyone to stretch every dollar they have these days. If you can do some competitive price analysis for gas and you don’t have to drive anywhere then that’s a bonus. I can imagine that applications like this one will remain popular for some time as gas prices continue to rise.

Read more from the OPIS press release.

Orange says Polish iPhone 3G customers weren’t paid actors

Folks, be honest with us here — did you really expect Orange and / or Apple to say anything other than this? Amidst reports that iPhone 3G line sitters at Polish Orange stores were actually paid to be there, the carrier has shot back in order to defend its dignity. In an e-mail reply to an Ad Age inquiry on the matter, a spokeswoman proclaimed that as “part of the excitement around the launch of the iPhone, some of [Orange's] team has been joining customers outside [of the] shops.” She also noted that “sales were strong” and that Orange “was happy,” though actual numbers were not revealed. So there you have it, now make of it what you will.
